Snorkelling History

Did you know that snorkelling is one of the world’s oldest sports. As with all ancient sports it was driven by hunting. There is evidence that people used hollow reeds to help them to dive for sponges in Bronze Age Crete over 3000 year ago!  You can imagine how valuable natural sponges were to people before they could be made in a factory.

And did you know that, as well as painting the Mona Lisa, back in the middle ages, Leonardo Da Vinci started designing the first modern day diving equipment. His sketch of webbed gloves became the model for today’s fins.

Snorkelling is fun, adventurous and exciting activity for the whole family. And as you only need a mask, snorkel and some fins to get started, it does not need to cost too much.

Anyone aged six and above can learn how to snorkel. It is an ideal activity for the whole family to enjoy together at the beach.

Dolphin Snorkeller

Is is a really good idea to have some training before you get started. This way you can learn properly how to make the best of the equipment and have the most fun undewater. Our first course is called Dolphin Snorkeller. This can be done in a swimming pool before you visit the sea side or go on holiday abroad. Did you know there are at least five differents way to fin along!

As you progress your skills through Dolphin Snorkeller you will get a Dolphin sticker to put in a log book. When you have collected all seven  stickers you will also get a certificate.badges

Once you can snorkel properly you will be able to have so much fun. As well as seeing the fish and coral close up you can play underwater games, search for treasure and even take undewater photgraphs.

Ask your parents to contact your local leisure centre or BSAC scuba club or school to book you up on a course.
